One of the UK’s leading wine merchants, Lanchester Wines, has received two prestigious retail customer awards in just one week.

Costcutter named Lanchester Wines its ‘Independent Supplier of the Year’ at the supermarket group’s annual conference (7 September 2017). Meanwhile IWC leading wine convenience retailer, Co-op, named the company its ‘Pioneer in Co-op Own Brand Product’ at its annual Pioneer Awards (14th September).

Co-op Pioneer in Own Brand Product

Co-op’s Pioneer Award was received in recognition of the soon-to-be-launched Pioneer Pinot Grigio which saw the retailer work in partnership with Lanchester Wines to challenge the traditional approach to ranging. Pioneering innovation in product development, over 3,000 Co-op members were involved in the creation of the wine choosing everything from the grape variety, name, tasting notes and even the label design.

The Pioneer in Co-op Own Brand Product award celebrated “exceptional efforts in developing, launching or re-launching Co-op own brand products / ranges” with nominees showcasing; innovation in product development, new ways of engaging Co-op customers, and promoting both the brand and values of the Co-op.

Costcutter Independent supplier of the Year

Costcutter awarded Lanchester Wines for developing ‘consistently outstanding products, excelling in both quality and value for money’. The wine business was commended for continuing to raise the bar within the wine category and, in particular, its progression of its EDLP programme across the supermarket group’s stores which, as a direct result, has seen an increased growth of wine sales year on year.

Costcutter’s feedback on the award win noted Lanchester Wines as:
“An innovative supplier who sources great quality wines offering our retailers value for money, in particular Prosecco and Rioja varieties.”

Huw Edwards, Costcutter’s Trading Director, said: “It was with great pleasure that we gave this award to Lanchester Wines who were worthy recipients. Over the years that we have been working with the team at Lanchester Wines we have found them to be proactive across all levels of the business and always available for us to speak with, up to and including the most senior teams.

“As a result, Lanchester Wines have excelled themselves at meeting the needs of our business and our retailers in terms of an expansive, excellent range which most recently included us sourcing quality wine for our exclusive label.

“We would like to extend our warmest congratulations to the whole team and thank them for their continued support of Costcutter Supermarkets Group.”

This is the second consecutive award for the wine merchant who scooped Costcutter’s Most Innovative Supplier at the same event in 2016.

Ian Richardson is senior business manager at Lanchester Wines: “We’ve worked closely with Steve McCann and the Costcutter team over the last few years to develop a sales strategy that fits both Costcutter’s business model and its customer profile.

“We strive to source excellent wine which consistently over-delivers on quality and value, within varieties we know Costcutter’s customers want to drink. Winning an award with such a prestigious customer two years in a row is a testament to our hard work, but we won’t be resting on our laurels and are already working on new strategies to raise the bar over the next 12 months.

“Both accolades are a reflection on the entire Lanchester Wines team. Without all areas of our business working together, such successes would not be possible.”
